The best mean of transport within the city for students living in student houses is public transport. Trams and buses are working also during night hours. You can buy single use tickets - for e.g. 15 or 30 minutes. Such ticket is valid from the moment of validation in a vehicle for time written on the ticket. If you change vehicle before the end time of your ticket, it is still valid - for e.g. you have 30-minute-ticket, you valided it at 11.00 am in a tram. You changed for a bus at 11.05 am, then changed for a different tram at 11.10 am and switched for a different bus at 11.15 am. - your ticket is valid all this time, until 11.30 am, no matter how many times you have changed the vehicles. There are also season tickets, e.g. for 24h, 7 or 30 days. To check up-to-date prices, visit MPK's website. For seasonal tickets for longer periods, you will need to apply for with about two-week-advance and buy electronic card "KOM karta" on which ticket will be loaded. You can buy tickets and apply for KOM karta at offices located for e.g. at Central Station Poznań Główny. At major bus/tram stops ticket machines are located, where you can buy tickets and recharge seasonal ticket, buy you cannot apply for KOM karta there.
Please be aware that buses and trams are rarely punctual in this city. The actual time of transfer may be different than scheduled. There are displays in almost all buses and in many trams which show the name of a next stop. However, you still need to be careful, because they are sometimes not appropiately synchornized.
Bicycle lanes are only in several places. Pedastrians usually do not see the difference between side-walk and bicycle lane and drivers often park their cars there. There is also shortage of benches to which you can attach your bicycle.
While you are diving a car you cannot use mobile phone (you have to use headphones, wireless recivers or speaker sets). Having lights turned on while you are driving is obligatory, no matter if it is a day or a night, summer or winter. Speed limits in Poland
